Emmy award winning documentary filmmaker Neal Hutcheson presents “The Last One,” an enduring cult classic with legendary Appalachian moonshiner Popcorn Sutton. Filmed in 2002, the documentary helped to create Popcorn Sutton fans around the globe, inspired a popular reality TV show, and continues to be inspire today. It is a peculiar piece of media that captured a moment of transition in Appalachian culture and turned a local character into a legend. Presented by the State Theatre in association with Hutcheson’s recent publication The Moonshiner Popcorn Sutton, winner of the 2022 National Indie Excellence Award and The Independent Spirit Award from The Independent Publishers Book Awards, the largest unaffiliated book contest in the world. At 7pm on September 29, the State Theatre will host a screening of the The Last One followed by a Q&A with Neal Hutcheson and Penn State anthropologist and filmmaker, Kirk French. In addition, Neal will also be available for a book signing after the event in the lobby of the State Theatre.

Bio:
Neal Hutcheson is an Emmy award winning filmmaker, photographer and author whose best known works center on Appalachian heritage in transition. His honors include a North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship, the Brown Hudson Award from the North Carolina Folklore Society, the North Carolina Filmmaker Award, and three regional Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Hutcheson lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.
