The artful young musicians of Korinya will be performing at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at The State Theatre in State College, PA. Korinya [ko-REE-nya] means roots in Ukrainian. The band will play the best of traditional Ukrainian folksongs for you in a lively, uplifting style. Feel free to stamp your feet and clap your hands to Ukrainian kolomeyka and hopak dance tunes that will remind you of Irish jigs and reels with their boundless energy. And you’ll hear exquisite Ukrainian vocals presented in the traditional Ukrainian style.
The band describes itself as a contemporary folk band with a fresh, grassroots sound. Their music is as bright as the traditional Ukrainian costumes they wear. They are fun and entertaining, and their music unique and unforgettable.
All the proceeds from the concert will benefit the local Sister’s Sister charitable organization, which is sending aid to the war-damaged city of Nizhyn in Ukraine. Here is the organization’s website that describes its activities in Nizhyn, which, like State College, is a college town with a large university: https://sisterssister.org/.
This is a great opportunity to delve deeper into Ukrainian culture. Tickets will be just $10 for adults, and $5 for students and children. There will be opportunities to give additional donations in the lobby of the Theatre by check, cash, Zelle, or Venmo if anyone wishes to do so. Advance tickets will be available on the State Theatre website https://thestatetheatre.org as well as at the box office.
The event is co-sponsored by the Penn State Ukrainian Society, the Woskob Family Endowment in Ukrainian Studies, and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Other businesses and organizations are welcome to co-sponsor the event. Contributions to Sister’sSister, which is a registered 501-c (3) charity, are tax deductible.
February 25, 2023 will mark one year and one day since the horrible Russian invasion of Ukraine. The war is raging on, but Ukraine is still standing strong, thanks, in part, to your support and that of the American people. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
