The film is centered on a machine capable of selectively erasing unhappy memories from people’s minds. Joel and Clementine are a couple whose relationship becomes strained and, after breaking up, they decide to erase every painful memory. However, as unpleasant memories are deleted from Joel’s mind, only the most beautiful memories remain, and Joel falls for Clementine all over again.
