"Giamatti isn’t playing a type, so much as a man who has taken refuge inside one in order to armour himself against the more exposing aspects of human existence. It’s a riotous but also slyly moving performance of a performance – and, along with Randolph’s, is rightly being talked about for awards."(opens in a new tab)

Family connections, and the lack thereof, are frequently a source of intense feelings around the holidays. For Angus Tully (a revelatory Dominic Sessa), the nightmare of being abandoned in his stuffy boarding school over Christmas break is amplified when he and the other “holdovers” are left in the care of the least popular teacher in school, Paul Hunham. Reuniting with his Sideways director in this 1970s-set heart-warmer, Paul Giamatti plays Hunham as the quintessential curmudgeon—until he and Tully find a way to break down the walls they have built around themselves.
